Letter from the Chairman
Chamber
membership is an important part of business no matter what the
economy. It is especially important today.
Your chamber membership is a key marketing opportunity. The Chamber
is a place where business people meet, network and do business
together. The Chamber is the place where business people come
together to form a consensus to help improve the way business
is done in Milford. It is also where the business community enriches
the culture of our city through its community-based programs.
Some of the key marketing tools include our monthly Business After
Hours, our committees and boards, Tuesday and Wednesday Leads
Groups, various luncheons, mailings and more. All of these are
available to our members at a very reasonable investment in both
dollars and time for this huge marketing potential.
How does the Chamber help to improve the business atmosphere?
Through our Legislative Action Committee, the Chamber works with
our lobbyist to promote Milford business needs at the state and
federal level. Our affiliate, Milford Progress (the Economic Development
arm of the Chamber and the official Economic Development Agency
for the city of Milford) has helped to procure new, beautiful
street lamps that will be going up around the Green later this
spring. At the State of the City luncheon, held May
20 at Aldario's Restaurant, Mayor James L. Richetelli, Jr. will
address members on issues and opportunities in our city.
You as a chamber member give back to the community several ways.
The BIC Golf Classic Tournament, which raised $19,000 in scholarships
last year that were awarded to Chamber member students going on
to higher education. Through the Education committee, the Chamber
also awards many mini-grants to middle and high school students
for projects that help both the schools and community. Milford
Pride, administers the Adopt-a-Spots program and,
partnered with Milford Garden Club, the window box contest helps
to dress-up our city. Other community events include the Summer
Nights by Harbor Lights Concert Series sponsored by the
Law Firm of Kapusta & Otzel, and the Halloween Parade and
Pumpkin Carving Contest sponsored by Advanced Placement. The Chamber
also coordinates the Festival of Lights that light up the Green
when the big guy in the red suit comes to town courtesy of Milford's
Professional Firefighters.
These are only a few of the many opportunities that Chamber membership
offers all businesses.

Keynote
Speaker:
Rev. Andrew G. Osmun,
St. Peter Episcopal Church
Reverend Osmun has had a diverse education and career, but
nothing that would prepare him for his role in the September
11 tragedy. Rev. Osmun never dreamed that he would play such
an integral role at the World Trade Center site. From September
29th until it was closed to the clergy, he worked at the site
at least 25 times. His shifts ranged from 8 to 16 hours. His
role was that of chaplain assisting at St. Pauls Chapel
at Broadway and Fulton. He also searched for remains, blessed
them when found, and covered the morgue. What he experienced
and learned changed his understanding of the world and his
perception of humanity and God. He accepted a Special
Recognition Award on behalf of all of the groups, associations
and not-for-profits of the City of Milford who volunteered
and labored on behalf of the victims of September 11. He in
turn presented the plaque to Mayor James L. Richetelli, Jr.
and it will be housed at the Parsons Government Center.
